Palworld Breeding Guide

Breeding in Palworld looks random and is not. One hidden number per Pal decides every result, and once you know how that number works you can plan a route to any of the 214 Pals in the game instead of pairing things and hoping. This guide covers the formula, the setup you need, what actually gets inherited, and how to plan a multi-step chain.

How Palworld breeding is calculated

Every Pal carries a hidden value the game calls CombiRank — breeding power. It ranges from 50 for the rarest Pals up to 3080 for the most common. Breeding averages the two parents:

child = closest Pal to floor((powerA + powerB + 1) / 2)

Two consequences follow, and they are the whole game. First, lower power means rarer — so pairing two strong parents pulls the average down toward rarer children. Second, because only the midpoint matters, wildly different pairs that happen to average to the same number give the identical child. That is why there is usually more than one valid combo for any target.

The exception is the unique-combo table: 74 specific pairs that ignore the formula outright and always produce a fixed child. Every variant Pal in the game comes from that table. They are listed in full on the breeding chart.

How to breed Pals — step by step

  1. 1

    Build a Breeding Farm

The Breeding Farm unlocks at level 19 in the technology tree and costs wood, stone and fibre. One farm handles one pair at a time, so most players end up with two or three once they start chaining breeds.

  2. 2

    Put two Pals in it

Drop any two Pals of opposite gender into the farm. Element, level and stats are irrelevant to which child you get — only the two breeding-power values matter. Gender is the one pairing rule the game actually enforces.

  3. 3

    Feed the farm cake

The pair will not produce an egg without a Cake in the farm's feed box. Cake needs flour, red berries, milk, eggs and honey, so a wheat plantation plus a Mozzarina and a Chikipi at base is effectively a prerequisite for serious breeding.

  4. 4

    Hatch the egg

Collect the egg and put it in an Egg Incubator. Hatch time scales with rarity — a common egg is quick, a Huge Dragon Egg is not. Building several incubators lets you run a chain without waiting on a single slot.

  5. 5

    Repeat up the chain

Most endgame targets are not reachable from starter Pals in one hop. Breed an intermediate, then use that intermediate as a parent for the next step. The calculator's chain view works this path out for you.

Passive skill inheritance

Species is decided by the formula; passives are decided separately. The child rolls from the combined pool of both parents' passives, with a chance of adding random new ones. This is the part of breeding worth optimising, because a Pal with four good passives outperforms the same species with none by a wide margin.

The practical method is to breed the species you want first, ignoring passives, then breed that Pal back against clean carriers until the passive pool converges. Keep the parents' passive lists short — every junk passive on a parent is a slot competing with the ones you actually want.

Planning a breeding chain

Most endgame Pals cannot be reached from starter Pals in a single breed — the midpoint of two common Pals is still a common Pal. You have to walk down: breed an intermediate that is rarer than both parents, then use it as a parent for the next step.

Working that out by hand means solving the midpoint equation repeatedly against a 214-entry table. Every Pal page on this site precomputes it instead: the shortest chain from commonly available starters, step by step, with the exact pair for each step.

Palworld breeding FAQ

How does breeding work in Palworld?

Every Pal has a hidden breeding power value called CombiRank. Add both parents' values, add one, divide by two and round down. The Pal whose own CombiRank sits closest to that number hatches from the egg. Ties break toward the lower Paldex number.

Does element or gender affect the child in Palworld?

Gender only matters in that you need one male and one female. Element, level, stats and passives have no effect on which species you get — that is decided purely by the two CombiRank values, plus the unique-combo table.

What level do you need to breed in Palworld?

The Breeding Farm unlocks at player level 19. You also need Cake, which in practice means a wheat plantation, a Mozzarina for milk, a Chikipi for eggs and a Beegarde for honey.

Do passive skills get inherited when breeding?

Yes. The child draws its passives from the pool of both parents' passives, with a chance of rolling additional random ones. Breeding two parents that already carry the traits you want is the only reliable way to stack a four-passive Pal.

How many guaranteed breeding combos are in Palworld?

There are 74 pairs in the unique-combo table that override the power formula. Everything outside that table follows the CombiRank maths.

What is the fastest way to breed a specific Pal?

Look the target up on its own breeding page. It lists every parent pair that produces it and the shortest chain from commonly available starter Pals, so you can see whether it is a one-step breed or a three-step project before spending cakes.
